Cercanías Madrid changes from this Friday due to works at Atocha
Cercanías Madrid faces a new phase of changes from this Friday in the middle of summer. Works at Atocha Cercanías will alter routes, frequencies and transfers on several lines, with a particular impact on passengers who use daily the Parla, Aranjuez, Fuenlabrada, Humanes, Móstoles and city-centre corridors.
The first phase will run from 17 to 22 July and will affect the C-3, C-4 and C-5 lines. The C-3 will begin and end its route at Villaverde Bajo, so passengers wishing to continue towards Atocha or Chamartín will have to change to the C-4.
The C-4a will be suspended between Atocha and Parla during those days. Trains will begin and end their route at Atocha, while users heading for Parla will have to use the C-4b, which will continue to run normally between Parla and Colmenar Viejo.
There will also be significant changes on the C-5. Between 17 and 22 July, the line will begin and end its route at Atocha, so those wishing to continue towards Humanes, Fuenlabrada or Móstoles-El Soto will have to change at the station itself.
The timetable will become even more complicated from 23 July. Until 16 August, the C-5 will be completely closed between Villaverde Alto and Embajadores. The service will be divided into two sections: Humanes and Fuenlabrada to Villaverde Alto, and Móstoles-El Soto to Embajadores, both with trains every 10 minutes.
To cover part of the affected section, there will be shuttle services between Villaverde Alto and Méndez Álvaro, stopping at Puente Alcocer, Orcasitas and Doce de Octubre. The planned frequency will be 35 minutes, so many journeys will require more time and different planning from usual.
In August, new disruptions will be added on the C-2, C-7, C-8a, C-8b and C-10 lines. There will be reduced frequencies, altered routes and changes to station access at stations such as Méndez Álvaro, as part of an operation aimed at adapting Atocha to a new railway layout.
The final phase will come with closures of the Sol tunnel on the weekends of 29 and 30 August and 5 and 6 September. On those days, the C-3 and C-4 lines will operate with temporary termini at Atocha and Nuevos Ministerios, a key change for those crossing Madrid from south to north.
Renfe will allow passengers with valid Cercanías tickets to use regular EMT buses as an alternative during the disruptions. Information will be communicated at stations, on trains, through digital channels, social networks and WhatsApp, something essential for avoiding unsuccessful journeys.
The change paints a clear picture of Madrid's summer rail travel: fewer passengers than in the peak working season, but more changes, more waiting and a greater need to check the route before setting off. The works promise to improve the Sol tunnel's capacity and service reliability, but over the coming weeks travelling on Cercanías will require patience and foresight.
