Madrid classrooms fill with microphones under a new educational programme
Madrid's classrooms sound different this school year. One hundred state schools have incorporated school radio stations as part of an initiative seeking to improve pupils' oral expression, creativity and digital skills.
The ‘Voces del Aula’ programme introduces equipment tailored to each educational stage. In Early Years and Primary, the kits include easy-to-use microphones, loudspeakers and mixing desks, while in Secondary and Vocational Training, more advanced systems are included that bring pupils closer to an almost professional environment.
Radio is not just a one-off activity. It is integrated into everyday classroom life as a tool for working on the curriculum, encouraging teamwork and developing critical thinking. Students create podcasts, current-affairs programmes or cultural content that is then shared on a common platform.
Beyond technical learning, the aim is to give pupils a voice. School radio enables them to take part, express themselves and gain confidence, something crucial at educational stages where communication plays a fundamental role.
The network already includes more than 200 centres and serves as a space for exchanging experiences. Content produced in different schools is shared, broadening the impact of the projects and connecting students from different parts of the region.
This initiative forms part of a broader educational digitalisation plan in Madrid, which seeks to adapt classrooms to new ways of learning. Radio thus becomes a tool that combines technology, creativity and participation in school life.
Madrid is moving towards a more active educational model, in which pupils not only learn but also create and communicate. Far from being a format of the past, radio is returning to classrooms as one of the keys to the present.
