Clàssica a la Platja turns Barceloneta into a unique stage
Barceloneta will change pace again this summer with Clàssica a la Platja 2026, which will bring two free concerts to Sant Sebastià beach on 8 and 9 July at 21:00. For residents, visitors and music lovers, the event turns an ordinary night by the sea into an open cultural experience, without tickets and in public space.
The series will bring together two major city ensembles in an unusual setting: the sand. On Wednesday 8 July, the Orquesta Sinfónica del Gran Teatre del Liceu, conducted by Josep Pons, will perform with the concert Liceu Simfònic. Música para todos.
The programme on that first evening will feature recognisable works of great dramatic force. Pieces by Brahms, Dvořák, Chaikovski, Borodín, Manuel de Falla, Ginastera and Ravel will be heard, with Boléro among the evening’s most anticipated moments.
Thursday 9 July will be the turn of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Barcelona y Nacional de Cataluña, the OBC, under the direction of Ludovic Morlot. The proposal, entitled Una sinfonía imaginaria, will bring together excerpts from major works by Borodín, Rachmaninoff, Brahms, Dvořák and Chaikovski.
The appeal of Clàssica a la Platja lies not only in the programme. It is also in the venue. Sant Sebastià beach, beside the seafront promenade and very close to the daily fabric of Barceloneta, becomes an open-air auditorium for two nights, with the sea in the background and the city going on around it.
For Barcelona, the event adds more than a summer cultural date. It takes symphonic music outside its usual spaces and brings it closer to people who might not enter a concert hall, but can stop at the beach one night to hear an orchestra live.
The organisers also plan reserved spaces for people with reduced mobility, and the concerts can be followed live on television and on the betevé website. This broadens the reach of the proposal beyond those who can physically come to Barceloneta.
For the neighbourhood, these two nights mean more activity, more visitors and a very different image of the beach: less associated with quick tourism and more connected to the city’s cultural life.
