Madrid now lets people view medical imaging tests on their mobile phone
Viewing an X-ray, CT scan or MRI from a mobile phone is now possible in Madrid. The Virtual Health Card has incorporated access to imaging tests carried out in public hospitals and health centres, an improvement intended to save journeys and facilitate everyday medical follow-up.
The new function allows users to view examinations directly from the app. The user must enter Mi Carpeta de Salud, go to Reports and results and select the Imaging tests section. From there, a button opens the viewer with the available images.
The change may be especially useful for patients with frequent check-ups, older people accompanied by relatives or those who need to consult a test before a medical appointment. It also helps keep information in one place without depending on papers, discs or trips to the health centre.
More than 3.9 million people in Madrid already use the Tarjeta Sanitaria Virtual. The app brings together 76 services and nearly 228 features, from checking prescriptions to medical reports, appointments and other procedures related to public healthcare.
The addition of imaging tests reinforces a clear trend: more and more healthcare procedures are carried out from the phone. In a city where many people string together work, transport and medical appointments, being able to review healthcare documents without leaving home can make a practical difference.
Digital access also makes it easier for the patient to arrive better prepared for an appointment. Seeing which tests are available, reviewing them calmly or having them to hand during a medical visit can improve communication with healthcare professionals.
The function does not replace medical interpretation of the images. X-rays, CT scans and MRIs must always be assessed with the corresponding report and by healthcare staff, but having them available in the app gives the patient more control over their own information.
The advance will be felt in very everyday actions: checking a test before leaving home, showing it at an appointment or reviewing it with a relative. Madrid’s public healthcare system thus gains another tool closer to the way the city now organises its time, procedures and care.
