Day of the Innocents 2025: what it is and why it is celebrated

The Day of the Innocents is celebrated in Spain every 28 December. It is the classic day of harmless jokes, ‘fake news’ in a humorous tone and small pranks that, ideally, hurt no one. The catchphrase when someone falls for one is: ‘Innocent, innocent!’

In Catalonia it is also known as Dia dels Sants Innocents, and it is very common to see light-hearted jokes with family, friends or even in the media, when clearly marked as humour.

When is the Day of the Innocents 2025?

28 December 2025, and always 28 December every year.

15 easy, harmless jokes, to avoid causing trouble

Change the wallpaper to a screenshot of the desktop.

Put tape over the mouse sensor.

Put a mobile phone into ‘airplane mode’ for five minutes, without losing anything important.

Put a paper cut-out figure on someone’s back, the classic version.

Change autocorrect from ‘hello’ to ‘hellooo 👋’, then undo it.

Put a false label on a food container: ‘super-spicy soup’, when it is not spicy.

Put a Post-it on the fridge: ‘Do not open: experiment’.

Replace sugar with salt: no, that goes too far. Better: a glass filled with cotton wool and sugar on top, visual only.

Show a ‘System update: 99%’ screenshot or image, without changing anything.

Say ‘You have been called by...’, only if it does not cause anxiety.

Send a group message: ‘Today everyone is coming in blue’, and you wear blue.

Change the keyboard language, then restore it immediately.

Put a sticker on the remote control: ‘Does not work on Tuesdays’.

A letter ‘from the neighbour’: ‘My parrot has escaped; it answers to Señor Alcalde’.

A safe food prank: frozen grapes to surprise people, without deceiving anyone about allergies.

The golden rule: nothing involving health, work, money, pets or sensitive topics. If in doubt, do not do it.
