Dalí reinvents himself in Barcelona with an exhibition that fuses art and technology
Barcelona unveils an exhibition that connects Dalí's universe with fashion and science. Casa Amatller is transformed into a sensory journey. Art, technology, and creativity come together in the heart of the city.
Barcelona once again takes centre stage in the cultural scene with the arrival of «Dalí Boulevard Cibernético» at Casa Amatller. This immersive exhibition not only transforms the iconic modernist building, but also invites visitors to discover a lesser-known side of Salvador Dalí: his obsession with technology and fashion as languages of the future.
The tour begins with a striking image: Dalí dressed as a golden astronaut, a faithful reproduction of the suit designed by Josep Mallerich in 1958. This piece, which greets visitors as soon as they enter, symbolises the artist’s fascination with scientific advances and his ability to anticipate trends that now seem commonplace.
The exhibition, organised by Layers of reality together with the Fundación Gala Salvador Dalí, goes far beyond painting. Here, fashion and jewellery become vehicles to explore the visionary mind of the genius from Empordà. Among the most eye-catching pieces are the Eskimo Eclipse glasses, created for Courrèges, and a futuristic dress designed with Christian Dior in 1965, imagining what women would look like in 2045, with a hat reminiscent of an antenna.
The dialogue between art and technology is reinforced by the presence of dresses with printed circuits, designed with Paco Rabanne for the Ballet cibernètic, and objects that recall today’s wearables. The exhibition uses virtual reality and audiovisual projections to immerse the public in Dalí’s universe, where cybernetics, quantum physics and biology take centre stage.
The experience is not limited to contemplation. Visitors can interact with reproductions of original pieces, such as Dalí’s cane, a symbol of his theatricality and desire to transcend. The tour culminates in a recreation of the Sala Mae West del Teatro-Museo Dalí de Figueres, where the famous red lips sofa invites you to take a photo and end the journey with a surrealist touch.
To further highlight the exhibition, three giant eggs have appeared on the paseo de Gràcia, evoking those that crown the casa de Portlligat and the museo de Figueres. This gesture connects contemporary Barcelona with the artist’s history, as he held his first exhibition in the Dalmau galleries on this very street in 1925.
The exhibition also revisits iconic moments from Dalí’s life through videos: from his walk through New York reciting Lorca, to his meeting with Jane Arden or the painting session with Raquel Welch. All of this reinforces the idea of a total Dalí, able to anticipate the impact of technology on culture and society long before it became a trend.
Casa Amatller, located in the very heart of the Eixample, is one of the finest examples of Catalan modernism. Its unique façade and detailed interiors have made it a landmark space for high-level exhibitions and cultural events. The choice of this building to host 'Dalí Boulevard Cibernético' is no coincidence: its history and architecture engage in dialogue with Dalí’s innovative vision, creating a unique environment where past and future meet in the centre of Barcelona.
