From the longest interchange to the most creative: Passeig de Gràcia unveils a corridor that sounds and moves
For years, the long corridor connecting the L3 and L4 lines at Passeig de Gràcia has been synonymous with rushing and quick steps. Now that unavoidable journey changes its story. Barcelona Metro’s best-known interchange has become an artistic corridor that turns travel into a sensory experience.
The installation, called ARS GRÀCIA, occupies 35 metres of the passageway and proposes an unusual interaction in public transport. As people walk, their presence activates a system that generates music, images and rhythms of light using artificial intelligence. Each movement is integrated into a changing composition, where travellers cease to be spectators and become part of the work.
The project is not limited to the digital environment. The space incorporates a small stage designed for live performances by metro musicians, equipped with an LED screen and professional sound. In this way, technology coexists with live performance and gives visibility to artists who form part of the city’s soundscape.
The pilot will operate for three months, during normal metro hours, and will serve to measure its impact on users’ experience. The launch was attended by Mayor Jaume Collboni and Deputy Mayor Laia Bonet, who highlighted the intention of turning a routine journey into a space with culture, stimuli and urban life.
ARS GRÀCIA forms part of the Metro Centenary initiatives and points to a new way of understanding daily journeys in Barcelona.
