Denis Villeneuve to direct the new James Bond: the saga enters epic territory

The Canadian filmmaker, responsible for works such as Dune, Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival, will be in charge of reinventing the universe of agent 007 under the Amazon MGM Studios banner.

Villeneuve, nominated for an Oscar on five occasions and winner of awards at Cannes, Berlin and Venice, is no stranger to the Bond myth. In his own words, he grew up watching the films with his father and considers the franchise «sacred ground». His appointment represents an unprecedented fusion of classic espionage action and the visual and narrative depth of fantasy cinema.

The news comes after Amazon's purchase of the franchise's creative rights, which in March 2025 closed a deal worth one billion dollars. Although it has not yet been confirmed who will play the next 007, everything points to the British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the favourite.

Tanya Lapointe, Villeneuve's wife, will be executive producer of the new project, reinforcing the idea of an intimate and visionary approach for Bond's future. According to Mike Hopkins, director of Amazon MGM Studios, “the legacy of 007 is in the hands of one of the greatest storytellers in contemporary cinema”.
