The Universitat de Barcelona is celebrating its 575th anniversary with a unique cultural proposal: free guided literary visits through its Historic Building. These routes, organised for the coming months, invite participants to explore the relationship between the emblematic university headquarters and literature, through texts by authors who studied or worked at the institution.
The tour is based on the anthology ‘Mons secrets. L’Edifici Històric de la Universitat de Barcelona en la literatura’, edited by Noemí Montetes-Mairal and Joan Santanach. The selection includes extracts by classic and contemporary writers who have made the building the setting for their works and experiences.
The organisation of the visits has taken into account the building's historic value and the personal experiences of generations of students and lecturers. From early student protests to love stories, every corner holds tales that now come to light on these routes.
Ramon Dilla, lecturer in Art History, stresses that the aim is to fill the spaces with the authors' voices and bring the university's heritage closer to the public. Aísha Targarona, a Cultura UB technician and Art History student, will guide visitors through seven key stops in the building.
The itinerary begins in the Entrance Hall, dedicated to Joan Maragall, and continues through the Central Garden, the Mathematics Cloister, the Paranimf Gallery, the Library, the Arts Courtyard and the Science Courtyard. At each stop, the historical context, the author's link with the university and an extract from their work are presented.
The featured authors include Alexandre Cirici, Francesc Vallverdú, Teresa Pàmies, Glòria Sabaté, Maria Aurèlia Capmany and Mercè Ibarz. The book also collects impressions from figures such as Josep Carner, Carmen Laforet, Jaime Gil de Biedma, Montserrat Roig, Maria Barbal, Ferran Soldevila, José María Valverde and Maria Àngels Anglada.
The visits will last one hour and will take place on Wednesdays 21 January, 11 February, 11 March, 15 April and 13 May, at 11:00. Advance registration through the university website is compulsory. Admission is free and places are limited.
