Historic remains discovered amid sewerage renewal in Ribera

An archaeological discovery has caused surprise during works in the Ribera neighbourhood. The site can be visited on Wednesday 11 March. Residential structures and a stretch of the old carrer de Cruanyes will be shown.

Renewal works on the sewer system in the Ribera neighbourhood have brought archaeological remains to light, connecting residents with Barcelona’s deepest history. Next Wednesday 11 March, at 12.00 noon, a guided visit will be organised on carrer Antic de Sant Joan to see these findings at close quarters.

During the tour, the Servei d’Arqueologia de Barcelona will explain the first results of the intervention and show the structures that have been found. Among the most notable elements are a stretch of the old carrer de Cruanyes and remains of houses from the modern period, witnesses to the urban transformation after the siege of 1714. The visit will make it possible to observe how today’s city coexists with vestiges of its past, in an area marked by works in Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera, within the Ciutat Vella district.
