Fires next to the tracks interrupt several Cercanías lines
Monday afternoon became complicated for hundreds of Cercanías Madrid travellers. Two fires near the tracks forced services to be interrupted on several sections and affected key lines such as the C2, C7, C8 and C10, at a particularly busy time.
The first alert came shortly after five in the afternoon because of a fire between Vallecas and Vicálvaro. The incident forced traffic to be halted at that point and disrupted C2, C7 and C8 services, used daily by passengers linking the Corredor del Henares with Atocha, Chamartín and other hubs in the capital.
The fire was brought under control without serious consequences and services began to recover progressively at around 18:45. Even so, during the interruption many users had to wait at stations, look for alternatives or accept knock-on delays.
Almost at the same time, another fire between Pozuelo and Las Rozas affected C7 and C10 services. In this case, services were also temporarily interrupted, although it was not necessary to cut the electrical power. Emergency services acted in the area and train movements were able to resume at around 17:45.
The impact extended beyond the affected sections. On a network as connected as Cercanías Madrid, a localised incident can cause delays, stoppages and route adjustments that end up being felt at very busy stations and in the central tunnels.
During the closure, Cercanías diverted some trains originating in or bound for Guadalajara via O’Donnell to reduce the effect on passengers. Service recovery was gradual, with frequencies progressively returning to normal as the tracks were cleared.
The incident again shows the network’s sensitivity to external problems such as fires alongside the infrastructure. For those who depend on the train for work, study or connections with other transport, an afternoon like this translates into waits, route changes and considerable uncertainty.
