The rescue of two people from Madrid on Moncayo reopens the debate on mountain safety
A rescue on Moncayo has once again brought attention to the risks of the mountains for those leaving Madrid in search of nature. Two young people were trapped by the cold and wind after setting out on a route without the right equipment, on a day that quickly became complicated.
The alert was raised in the afternoon, when the hikers could neither continue nor return. GREIM de Tarazona went to the area and managed to locate them in a difficult spot, where conditions were already wintry.
The rescue team had to make its way over snowy ground, with sub-zero temperatures and strong gusts of wind. The young people were not injured, but they were affected by the cold and exhaustion, without basic equipment such as thermal gloves or technical gear.
The operation continued into the night, with an assisted descent using ropes and head torches. In the end, both were able to return without physical injury, but only after a risky situation that required a full operation to be deployed.
Moncayo is one of the usual getaways for people leaving Madrid, especially at weekends and on public holidays. Its proximity means many people underestimate the conditions, which can change in a matter of hours.
