Two Plaza de la Independencia restaurants set trends with their anniversary

Berria and Barracuda MX celebrate five years in Plaza de la Independencia with special menus and gastronomic novelties. Competition in the area is intensifying and Madrid leisure plans gain new options for people seeking different experiences.

Plaza de la Independencia remains Madrid’s gastronomic epicentre: between Puerta de Alcalá and Retiro, two establishments with their own personalities are celebrating their fifth anniversary with trend-setting proposals.

Berria, the benchmark wine bar with more than 3,000 wines, launches three special menus in March — La Playa, Las Rocas and Las Dunas — featuring its signature dishes: Joselito ham croquettes, impeccable Santoña anchovies and daily pairings chosen by its sommeliers. From champagne to Argentine pinot noir, all in an atmosphere to be enjoyed without haste.

On the other side of the square, Barracuda MX, Roberto Ruiz’s contemporary Mexican restaurant, is radically renewing its menu with Mauricio Altamirano at the helm: Asian influences, won-tostadas with bluefin tuna, tropical oysters with pineapple, prawn ceviche with hibiscus flower, new tacos featuring chop, baby squid and pork shank, and the return of guacamole with prawn fritters. For the more carnivorous: charcoal-grilled mature beef loin in Monterrey style, finished at the table.

In one of the capital’s most demanding squares, creativity and quality continue to win out: two perfect spaces for an unforgettable meal, a romantic plan or a celebration that leaves its mark in central Madrid.
