Madrid travel pass goes mobile in November
Public transport users in Madrid will be able to carry their pass on their phone from November, thanks to the new digital version of the Tarjeta Transporte Público Personal.
The Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid has confirmed that the travel pass will no longer depend exclusively on a physical card and will be usable directly on Android phones compatible with NFC technology and Google Wallet. The move to digital follows a pilot programme involving 4,000 users, expanded in the final testing phase to more than twice as many volunteers. The new system will operate through the official MiTarjetaTransporte app, where passengers will be able to activate their digital card, top up travel tickets and validate entry on Metro, Cercanías, buses and trams. Only one active format will be allowed per user, meaning that activating the card on a phone will deactivate the physical version.
Activation will be quick: users will simply need to download the app, register on the CRTM website and follow the instructions received by email. The system, available on Android 9.0 or later, incorporates anti-fraud and verification measures to ensure secure travel. iPhone users will have to wait a little longer, as integration with Apple Wallet is planned but does not yet have an official launch date.
