Barcelona airport prepares major works that will change the pace of flights
Barcelona airport is undergoing key renovations on its runways. There will be temporary flight restrictions. The investment exceeds 110 million euros. The works aim for greater efficiency and safety. Changes are coming that will affect thousands of passengers.
Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport is beginning an ambitious runway renovation with an investment of more than 110 million euros. The works focus on the cross runway and the sea runway (the one closest to the coast), aiming to improve safety and efficiency and reduce runway waiting times. The sea runway will be the main focus: complete asphalt renewal, construction of a second taxiway and doubling holding positions (from 3 to 6), to prevent queues of aircraft at the threshold. These improvements are an essential preliminary step before the future airport expansion, still pending approval.
The first intervention will arrive in November 2026: simultaneous closure of the cross runway and the main runway for 11 days. Operational capacity will fall by almost half (from 38–40 operations/hour to only 22 flights/hour). A rapid exit will be enabled on the cross runway to shorten the journey after landing, especially useful for night operations that reduce noise over residential areas.
