Water will be more expensive in Madrid from this Sunday (and will keep rising until 2030)
On 2 June, a 3% increase in the water tariff from Canal de Isabel II comes into effect. This is just the first of six confirmed rises before the end of the decade.
The change is now official: the Consejo de Gobierno of the Comunidad de Madrid has approved a new price structure for the water supply. The measure entails an immediate 3% increase and a fixed schedule of future increases by the same percentage, planned for every 1 January from 2026 to 2030. If the plan is maintained, water will be almost 20% more expensive in six years. The regional government justifies the measure as part of the financing plan for Canal de Isabel II investments, which foresees improvement works on water infrastructure worth more than 2 billion euros. With this new tariff system, the public company expects to take in an extra 598 million over that period. The previous tariff review was applied in 2024, but affected only high consumption —mostly homes with a swimming pool or garden— on the grounds of penalising waste. Now, the increase will be general. Madrid’s water tariff system is progressive and two-part: it combines a fixed charge with a variable one, penalises excessive consumption and adapts according to seasonality. There are discounts for people in vulnerable situations, but most households will notice the change on their next bill. The new phase begins this Sunday.
