Art takes over from the heat: Madrid launches a cultural refuge network in summer

Madrid turns the heat into an excuse to immerse oneself in art. During the most intense summer months, the city activates a network of cultural spaces that will operate as temporary refuges between three and five in the afternoon, precisely when the thermometer reaches its peak. The proposal includes brief live flamenco performances inside museums as emblematic as the Prado, the Reina Sofía, the Thyssen-Bornemisza, the National Archaeological Museum, the Gallery of Royal Collections and the Museum of History. The shows, organised by SO-LA-NA Entertainment, will be included with normal admission.

In addition, libraries, cultural centres, cinemas and places as distinctive as the Círculo de Bellas Artes, CentroCentro, Matadero Madrid and the OXO Video Game Museum join the plan. All will offer respite from the heat accompanied by music, literature, exhibitions and other activities open to the public. More than a programme, ‘Take Refuge in Culture’ is an invitation to reconnect with the city from within, among works of art, books and Andalusian rhythm.
