The rise of bookshops in Barcelona grows with public and private support
Barcelona is strengthening its position as one of the most active cities when it comes to books. With nearly 300 bookshops, both independent and major chains, the sector is experiencing a period of growth that is reinforcing its presence in the city’s cultural life.
One of the most visible examples is La Central, backed by the Italian group Feltrinelli, which already has several locations in the city. Its expansion reflects a broader trend: focusing on bookshops that combine book sales with cultural programming.
Growth is not limited to major operators. Neighbourhood bookshops continue to play an important role, adapting to new habits with activities, presentations, and formats that go beyond traditional book buying.
At the same time, the Ayuntamiento de Barcelona has launched a specific support plan for the sector. The initiative aims to strengthen the viability of these businesses and help them adapt to changes in cultural consumption.
The result is an increasingly diverse network that combines tradition with new formats. Barcelona is thus reinforcing its profile as a literary city, with spaces that serve both as points of sale and as meeting places.
There will be more active bookshops with cultural programming nearby, not just for buying books. Activities such as presentations and workshops are being strengthened, bringing more cultural life to everyday routines. This also helps to maintain local businesses and attract new types of audiences.
The trend points to a stronger and more visible network throughout the city.
