Banco de España opens the door to exchanging damaged banknotes: how the process works
Damaged notes can be exchanged if at least half is returned or the rest is shown destroyed.
The procedure will be carried out at Banco de España branches or through financial institutions, and the amount can be collected in cash or deposited into an account.
Banknotes damaged by anti-theft systems will incur a surcharge of €0.10 per note from 100 pieces onwards, unless the damage is due to an attempted theft that is supported by a police report, in which case the exchange will be free of charge. If the banknote has a manufacturing defect, replacement will be immediate and at no cost.
To process the request, you must book an appointment in advance and present the required documentation. The institution warns that it reserves the right to limit certain operations depending on the circumstances of the case.
