Free Rodalies travel continues until 30 April after more than 2.5 million passes are issued

More than 2.5 million free passes have been issued in just two months. The measure, intended as a temporary solution, remains in force. The future of the service is still uncertain. Thousands of users depend on this free travel every day.

Free travel on Rodalies has transformed the routine of people travelling around Barcelona and its surroundings. Since the end of January, obtaining a free pass to travel by train has become commonplace for thousands of people. In barely two months, Renfe has issued more than 2.5 million of these passes, which allow travel free of charge on Rodalies, Regionals and Media Distancia in Catalunya.

The decision to introduce this measure came after the Gelida accident, which made it necessary to review all railway infrastructure. Initially, free travel was announced for 30 days, but the lack of normality in the service led to its extension first until 31 March and later until 30 April. Now, with the network still far from recovering its usual rhythm, the Generalitat has asked the Ministerio de Transportes for a further extension.

Station machines issue these cardboard passes almost instantly. Each card allows ten journeys, which could translate into up to 25 million journeys made in just two months. However, the ease of obtaining them means that many users request new passes before exhausting the previous ones, so the real number of journeys could be lower, although it continues to grow week after week.

The initial expectation was that the situation would quickly return to normal, but reality has been different. The Territori minister, Sílvia Paneque, already warned in February that free travel would remain in force with no clear end date. Now, the Generalitat estimates that the network will not operate with any degree of normality again until the first week of May, maintaining uncertainty among regular travellers.

Rodalies de Catalunya is the main commuter rail system in the Barcelona metropolitan area and connects the city with dozens of municipalities. Its operation is key to the daily mobility of students, workers and families. Recurring incidents and delays have caused frustration and brought the need for investment and structural improvements to the centre of the debate. Shared management among administrations adds complexity to any long-term solution.
