Madrid closes its summer swimming pools today with 36 degrees in the street
Madrid experiences the last day of its summer municipal swimming-pool season this Sunday 6 September. After almost four months open, the council's outdoor facilities will close at the end of the day and will not begin their summer season again until 2027.
The closure comes with temperatures hardly typical of a summer farewell. For the Metropolitan and Henares area, the Comunidad de Madrid forecast a high of 36.5 ºC this Sunday, after an estimated 37.9 ºC on Saturday. The heat episode has kept values clearly high during the first days of September.
Those wishing to make the most of the final hours can still access municipal swimming pools open this Sunday as part of the campaign. General hours are divided into a morning session, from 10:00 to 15:00, an afternoon session, from 16:00 to 21:00, and a full-day entry between 10:00 and 21:00.
The season began on 15 May and has included facilities spread across much of the city’s districts, from Peñuelas and Mistral to Concepción, Vicente del Bosque, Luis Aragonés, Hortaleza, Aluche, Casa de Campo, Moratalaz, Palomeras, San Blas, Orcasitas, Margot Moles, Cerro Almodóvar and Plata y Castañar.
Not all of them have followed exactly the same calendar. Entrevías, for example, was due to close on 31 August because of refurbishment works at the facility, while other centres suffered opening delays at the start of the campaign. It is therefore better to speak of the general end of the season and not state that all pools initially included remain operational until today.
The four summer pools managed by the Comunidad de Madrid in the capital also end their campaign this Sunday: Puerta de Hierro, Canal de Isabel II, San Vicente de Paúl and Centro de Natación M-86.
The end of the season does not mean all swimming options disappear from this Monday. Indoor pools at sports centres continue on their own schedules and, outside the capital, some municipalities have decided to extend outdoor swimming for a few days. In Alcorcón, for example, certain pools will remain open until 13 September, while Pozuelo keeps one of its facilities open until the 9th.
In the city itself there is still a temporary exception outside the municipal network: the Universidad Complutense summer pool is due to continue until Tuesday 8 September.
The municipal campaign therefore ends just as Madrid is still experiencing very high temperatures. The fall will begin to be noticeable in the coming days, but from this Monday municipal outdoor pools will cease to be one of the usual options for tackling the heat in neighbourhoods.
