Madrid nears 39 ºC today, but relief will arrive sooner than expected
Madrid is going through another of the week's hottest days this Tuesday, 18 August. The orange warning remains active until 21:00 in the metropolitan area and the Henares corridor, where highs may reach 39 ºC. In the capital, temperatures are around 38 ºC during the afternoon.
The heat will remain intense on Wednesday, although it will begin to lose strength. The warning will be lowered to yellow between 13:00 and 21:00 in the city of Madrid and the Henares, with highs forecast at around 36°C. Nights will also begin to be somewhat more bearable, with lows close to 21°C in the city.
The significant change will arrive on Thursday. Highs will fall to around 31°C in Madrid, around seven degrees less than this Tuesday, and lows will drop to 19°C. For the moment, no high-temperature warnings are forecast for that day, which will bring several consecutive days of extreme heat to an end.
Friday will maintain this new outlook, with a high of around 31°C and a low of 18°C in the capital. In the Sierra de Guadarrama, the weather will be more unsettled: rain and occasional showers are expected during the second half of the day, and it cannot be ruled out that they will be accompanied by storms.
Saturday will remain warm, but far from the values at the beginning of the week. Madrid will once again be close to 31°C and lows will drop to around 17°C. Some showers may recur in the Sierra in the afternoon, occasionally accompanied by storms.
The drop will be even more marked on Sunday. The forecast puts Madrid’s high at around 27°C and its low near 15°C, with more cloud cover and the possibility of a shower. Similar values would continue on Monday, consolidating a much cooler atmosphere than that of this week.
The difference will be particularly noticeable at night. After lows close to 24°C during the warmest spell, Madrid could wake up on Sunday and Monday to around 15°C, a change capable of relieving the accumulated heat in homes and streets after several difficult days.
Until that turn arrives, the last hours of this Tuesday remain the most delicate. It is advisable to reduce intense outdoor exercise, seek shade, drink water frequently and pay particular attention to older people, children and vulnerable people. From Thursday, Madrid will change scenario: from the orange warning and 39°C to afternoons close to 30 and nights that will once again allow people to open the window without encountering the day’s heat.
