Madrid faces another critical afternoon with highs of up to 38 degrees

Madrid bids farewell to July with another day of intense heat that will force people to reorganise outdoor plans. The yellow warning for high temperatures will remain active from 13:00 to 21:00, coinciding with the busiest hours in streets, parks and terraces.

Thermometers may reach 38 degrees across much of the Community of Madrid. In the Henares corridor, isolated values close to 39 cannot be ruled out, while maximums in the lower areas of the mountains will comfortably exceed 35 degrees.

The morning will begin with some mid-level cloud, but the sky will tend to clear as the hours pass. The presence of calima may leave a hazier atmosphere and increase the feeling of heaviness during the afternoon.

The wind will be light and variable at the beginning and end of the day. During the middle hours, it will blow moderately from the south-west and may bring some more noticeable gusts to broad avenues, viewpoints and open spaces.

The main recommendation is to avoid intense exercise and reduce direct exposure to the sun between midday and late afternoon. Walks, training sessions and children’s activities will be safer early in the day or when the temperature begins to fall.

Particular attention should be paid to older people, children, outdoor workers and those with chronic illnesses. Drinking water frequently, seeking air-conditioned spaces and keeping in touch with vulnerable relatives can prevent heat-related problems.

Journeys may also be more uncomfortable, especially long trips on foot or at transport stops with little shade. Carrying water, light clothing and head protection will help people cope with an afternoon marked by very high temperatures.

The day will leave the city slower during the middle hours and more active when the sun goes down. Terraces, parks and squares will regain activity at nightfall, when Madrid finds some relief after another afternoon above 35 degrees.
