Barcelona will go from 33 to 27 degrees in 24 hours: the weather changes on Wednesday
Barcelona has a date for the first serious relief after several days of exceptional heat for September. Monday and Tuesday will still retain fully summery conditions, but on Wednesday the 9th a much more noticeable change will arrive: temperatures will fall and the chance of rain and storms will increase clearly.
Before that turn, two hot days remain. For Monday, highs of around 32 ºC are expected, and on Tuesday the city could again reach 33 ºC. Minimum temperatures will remain high, around 23–25 ºC, so tropical nights will continue at least at the start of the week.
The break arrives on Wednesday. Both AEMET and Meteocat point to a marked drop in the high, which could remain between 26 and 28 ºC. Compared with Tuesday’s 33 ºC, that represents a fall of around five or six degrees in just one day.
The change will also be felt at night. Meteocat puts minimum temperatures at around 21 ºC on Wednesday and close to 20 ºC on Thursday and Friday. Other models even envisage somewhat lower values. After several exceptionally warm early mornings, the difference will be noticeable, especially in the inner and denser neighbourhoods.
Rain will be the other element to watch. Meteocat forecasts a possibility of showers with thunderstorms on Wednesday, while AEMET significantly raises the probability of precipitation. The location and intensity may still vary, so it is too early to guarantee strong storms specifically over Barcelona, but Wednesday will for now be the day with the greatest rain risk of the whole week.
The change comes after an extraordinary start to September. Observatori Fabra repeatedly broke its monthly record during the first days of the month and recorded 34.1 ºC, the highest temperature measured there in September since its series began in 1914. At other points in Barcelona, temperatures also comfortably exceeded 33 ºC.
On Thursday the 10th, the situation should stabilise, with highs around 27 ºC and minima close to 20. For the Diada on Friday the 11th, the current forecast outlines a much calmer scenario, with cloudy intervals, around 27–28 ºC during the day and little chance of rain.
The difference from the weekend will therefore be clear, but it will arrive later than initially seemed: Barcelona will still have to get through Monday and Tuesday with heat before Wednesday brings the real change in the weather.
