Madrid shifts from cool weather to summer heat, with highs of up to 34 degrees
Madrid enters a very clear change in weather this week: the cool conditions of recent days are over, and weather much more typical of June or July than mid-May is arriving. Temperatures start to rise from this Tuesday and the jump will be evident from Wednesday, with highs already above 30 degrees in the capital.
On Wednesday 20 May, the thermometer will be around 31 degrees in Madrid, with partly cloudy skies and a much drier, brighter feeling than last week. On Thursday, the heat will take another step: highs of up to 33 degrees are expected, along with a very sunny day, one of those when walking at midday through areas without shade starts to feel arduous.
The peak will arrive between Friday and Saturday, when the capital could reach 34 degrees. Minimum temperatures will also rise and will be around 16–18 degrees, so nights will no longer feel as cool. It will not yet be a clear tropical night in every neighbourhood, but it will be a foretaste of the sustained heat that is beginning to lengthen the Madrid summer.
The cause lies in the arrival of high pressure and warm air that will push temperatures up across much of the centre, south and north-east of the peninsula. AEMET forecasts that many areas will exceed 30 degrees during the second half of the week, with even higher values inland and in southern Spain.
In practice, Madrid will begin to operate with summer habits ahead of time. More terraces in the afternoon, more people seeking shade in parks, more water consumption and less desire to cross hard-surfaced squares in full sun. It will also be a week to take care with children, older people and those who work long hours outdoors.
The heat will continue on Sunday, although it could ease slightly. The forecast points to highs of around 32 degrees and more cloud cover, with no major changes in the overall conditions. For now, Monday remains on the same course: fairly clear skies and temperatures close to 33 degrees.
These early heat episodes have become more common in Madrid. What is striking is not only reaching 30 degrees in May, but how easily the city moves in a few days from jackets and rain to an almost summery atmosphere. For many residents, that increasingly abrupt transition is already part of the capital’s real calendar.
