The Somosierra battlefield will receive cultural-heritage status

The Somosierra battlefield, a key setting of Napoleon's 1808 offensive, is preparing to receive Bien de Interés Cultural status.

The Madrid authorities will protect not only the historic pass, but also the defensive remains: fragments of the bridge over the Duratón, the Napoleonic fortified post and the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad.

Every year, the municipality recreates the battle with participants dressed in uniforms from the early 19th century, representing the struggle between Spanish troops and French infantry alongside Polish cavalry on mountainous terrain.

This year, the re-enactment will take place on 30 November, with representative scenes, guided visits and a commemorative ceremony, while the battlefield and its surroundings will become part of the region's cultural heritage.
