El Capricho to open more days and its palace to become a museum after the summer
El Capricho Park is about to change its relationship with the city. The City Council is considering extending its opening to weekdays, with guided tours and small groups, coinciding with the future opening of the palace as a museum after the summer.
Until now, this historic garden was only open on weekends and public holidays, with a daily limit of one thousand visitors. The new proposal aims for a more accessible model, while still maintaining control: between 150 and 200 visitors per day on weekdays, to preserve the balance of the surroundings.
The change is linked to the opening of the palace as the Museo de la Duquesa de Osuna, a project that seeks to breathe new life into the site after years of restoration. Features such as the casino de baile and the fortín have also been restored after the damage caused by Filomena, returning the park to its original value.
Unlike other parks in Madrid, El Capricho has never been a permanently open public space. Its historic character and landscape design require limiting entry and organising controlled visits, something that could now become part of the city's weekly routine.
The measure, still under consideration, seeks a delicate balance: opening the park to more residents of Madrid without losing its essence. If confirmed, it would mean a change in the way people enjoy one of Madrid's most unique gardens.
Beyond leisure, El Capricho represents another way of experiencing the city. A place where the pace slows down and where history, nature, and heritage coexist just minutes from the centre. Madrid is already starting to move in that direction.
