Barcelona will renew Tenor Masini with more space for pedestrians
Carrer Tenor Masini, in Sants-Montjuïc, is preparing for a complete transformation. The City Council has approved the project to renew this street, situated between carrer de Sants and Violant d’Hongria Reina d’Aragó, in order to make it more accessible, safe and comfortable for those who use it every day.
The work will affect more than 3,000 square metres and change the way people move along the street. The main idea is to create a single-level surface, without the traditional differences in height between pavement and carriageway, to make passage easier for pedestrians, older people, pushchairs, wheelchairs and residents with reduced mobility.
The refurbishment will give pedestrians greater prominence and reduce the role of private vehicles on a residential and commercial street. It is not just about changing the paving, but about arranging the space better so that walking, crossing or stopping is easier and less uncomfortable.
The planned budget amounts to €2.24 million. The works will be put out to tender and begin in winter 2027, with an approximate duration of one year. During that period, the area will be affected, but the result should be noticeable in the accessibility and urban quality of the stretch.
The project includes new seating areas, renewed street furniture and a general improvement to the public space. These changes are intended to ensure that the street functions not only as a place of passage, but also as a space where people can stop, wait, talk or support the neighbourhood's commercial activity.
Waste containers will also be reorganised and signage updated. These details, less visible than a new level surface or renewed paving, are often key to making the street work better day to day and preventing unnecessary obstacles.
The intervention also includes the installation of a new fire hydrant at the junction with carrer Rosés. This improvement reinforces the safety of the area and forms part of a broader upgrade to urban services linked to the refurbishment.
Tenor Masini is one of those streets that many residents cross almost without thinking, but which greatly shapes the neighbourhood's everyday experience. Its connection with carrer de Sants, one of Barcelona's major commercial thoroughfares, means that any improvement in accessibility and comfort has a direct impact.
The work fits Barcelona's policy of calming streets and recovering space for more neighbourhood-oriented uses. In dense neighbourhoods such as Sants, every metre counts: a more comfortable pavement, a clearer crossing or a seating area can change residents' relationship with their immediate surroundings.
When the works are complete, Tenor Masini should cease to be merely a narrow thoroughfare and become a more welcoming street. The refurbishment will not transform all of Sants on its own, but it can improve one specific part of daily life: moving around with fewer barriers, greater safety and more space to stay.
