The Castell de Montjuïc reopens with an expanded historical tour
Barcelona unveils a new way to look at its history. The Castell de Montjuïc reopens its Centro de Interpretación with an expanded tour and a completely renewed museography that transforms the visitor experience on the mountain.
The space is increasing from four to seven rooms and offers a more complete journey through the evolution of the site, from its military function to its role as a symbol of memory in the city. The reopening, scheduled for this Saturday at 18:00, marks a further step in Montjuïc’s cultural recovery.
The project, led by Josep Maria Vila and Ricard Conesa, incorporates documents, previously unseen photographs and audiovisual resources that make the past easier and more accessible to understand. The intervention forms part of the city’s tourism plan and has been financed with European Next Generation funds.
One of the most notable elements is the inclusion of original remains, such as a section of a 17th-century bastion recovered in the latest excavations. Such pieces make it possible to understand how the fortress evolved and its relationship with Barcelona’s urban and defensive setting.
The new museography opts for visual formats, digital reconstructions and testimonies that connect better with today’s visitor. Objects from municipal collections that had not previously been displayed have also been added, enriching the historical narrative.
The renovation strengthens Montjuïc as a cultural hub and improves the experience for residents and tourists. Barcelona expands its heritage offering with a space that is more educational, accessible and connected to urban memory.
