Arganda opens a Cool Point for people vulnerable to heat
Arganda del Rey has set up a Municipal Cool Point to protect people most exposed during days of intense heat. The space will operate at the Senior Citizens' Centre, located at Paseo de la Estación 5, and will be open every day during the summer season.

The opening hours will be 9:00 to 20:00, a period designed to cover much of the hardest part of the day. The measure seeks to offer an air-conditioned, calm and accessible place to people who do not have suitable housing in which to take refuge or who spend many hours on the street.
The resource is aimed especially at homeless people and residents in vulnerable situations. During spells of high temperatures, not everyone can close shutters, switch on a fan or remain in a cool home. For some, finding shade and water is already an urgent need.
Access will be free and will not require prior registration. That ease is important because it allows anyone affected by the heat to come without procedures, waiting or administrative barriers. The priority is for the refuge to work as a rapid response when the thermometer rises.
The opening of Punto Frío comes with the first heatwaves of summer and in a context in which more and more municipalities are adapting their services to extreme temperatures. Air-conditioned centres, libraries, public facilities and spaces for older people are beginning to play a key role as urban refuges.
Centro de Mayores de Arganda is already a familiar place for many residents. Its location next to the station and good connections with the rest of the municipality make it easier for it to become a point of support for people who need to rest, cool down or spend a few hours out of the sun.
The measure also reminds us that heat does not affect everyone equally. Older people, those living alone, people with health problems and those without stable housing are much more vulnerable when temperatures soar for several consecutive days.
Arganda thus joins a trend that will gain weight in Madrid summers: opening public spaces so that no one is completely exposed to the heat. It is not a definitive solution to the climate problem, but it is a concrete tool for reducing risks in daily life.
In a city, protecting oneself from heat depends not only on the weather but also on the resources each person has at hand. That is why a cool, open space with no requirements can make the difference between enduring a difficult day and facing a situation of real danger.
