Madrid’s sky is covered in smoke by a forest fire in Toledo

A dense grey cloud, accompanied by ash and the smell of burning, surprised thousands of Madrid residents on Thursday afternoon. The cause: a forest fire that broke out at 15:02 in the municipality of Méntrida, Toledo, just a few kilometres southwest of the Comunidad de Madrid. The fire, detected by a fixed lookout and confirmed by the Fidias de Castilla-La Mancha system, quickly reached Level 1 of the Plan Infocam, indicating a potential danger to inhabited areas or nearby infrastructure. Its proximity to the Madrid region also triggered alarms in the Plan Infoma of the Comunidad de Madrid, which mobilised its own resources to support firefighting efforts.

The column of smoke was visible from several towns in the south of Madrid such as Alcorcón, Móstoles, El Álamo, and Navalcarnero, and even cast a greyish hue over the sky in the city centre. In some neighbourhoods, the smell of smoke was clearly noticeable, causing concern among residents. The Calypo-Fado residential area, close to the fire and near Aldea del Fresno, was subject to special civil protection measures, including preventive confinements.

The firefighting operation has deployed 19 units and 66 personnel, including helicopters, ground brigades, and coordination and logistical support teams. The main objective is to prevent the fire from spreading to populated areas or ecologically valuable spaces. Firefighting efforts are ongoing while wind and temperature conditions remain a key factor in its development.
