Madrid faces two years without the Conde de Casal tunnel: how daily traffic will be affected

Traffic will change from the early hours. Traffic coming from the A-3 will lose entry capacity and many vehicles will have to be diverted on surface roads, while Plaza de Conde de Casal will absorb a large part of the tunnel's usual flow.

The changes will also affect specific movements within the area. Some turns will be restricted and several usual routes will temporarily disappear, forcing residents and drivers to rethink their daily journeys for months.

Public transport is not left out either. Several EMT lines are changing stops and routes to adapt to the works, including changes to lines connecting south-eastern neighbourhoods with central Madrid.

The project forms part of the redevelopment of the future interchange and the connection with new transport infrastructure. The City Council maintains that, once the works are completed, the area will gain capacity and reduce congestion.

But until then, the transformation will be very visible in daily routine. Traffic jams, route changes and more pressure on nearby streets will set the pace in one of Madrid's busiest entry and exit areas.

UPD: Madrid City Council has announced new overnight closures on the M-30 next to Conde de Casal between the nights of 6 and 9 July. The disruptions will take place from 23:00 to 6:00 and will affect different carriageways and bypasses on the M-30, with diversions signposted via side or central carriageways depending on the night. The first intervention, from 6 to 7 July, will close the outer side carriageway between kilometre points 9.8 and 8.7, as well as the access slip road from the A-3 towards the outer carriageway of the M-30. The City Council recommends avoiding private vehicles in the area and checking traffic conditions before travelling around Conde de Casal.
