Madrid cuts afternoon cinema prices to take refuge from the heat

The measure forms part of the 'Take refuge in culture' initiative, included in the Veranos de la Villa programme. The discount will apply at cinemas in different neighbourhoods and shopping areas, so it will not be necessary to travel to the city centre to find a participating venue.

Participating venues include Cines Verdi de Chamberí, Cines Embajadores, Golem, Odeon Multicines Alcalá Norte and several Cinesa, Mk2 and Yelmo cinemas. The specific offer may vary depending on the cinema, film and chosen time.

The initiative focuses on screenings before 17:00, just when the heat is usually most intense and walking around the city is less appealing. In addition to reducing ticket prices, air-conditioned cinemas thus become an alternative to shopping centres, swimming pools and terraces.

When the sun goes down, the film programme also moves outdoors. This summer sees the return of spaces such as La Terraza Magnética at La Casa Encendida, CinePlaza Matadero, Veranos en el Parque at Parque de Santander, and Cibeles de Cine inside CentroCentro.

These series combine films, special screenings and unusual settings, from courtyards and squares to rooftops and parks. They are especially sought-after plans during July and August, when many residents prefer to delay their activities until temperatures fall.

Before buying a ticket, it is advisable to check the timetable and conditions at each cinema, as not all screenings may have the same discount. Those wishing to attend summer cinemas should also book in advance, especially at weekends and for the most popular films.
