Movistar Arena hosts OVO, Cirque du Soleil’s touring show
Movistar Arena is transformed this weekend with the arrival of OVO, Cirque du Soleil’s touring show. The production brings circus to a large-venue format and alters Madrid’s cultural agenda with large-scale staging.
Far from the traditional big top, the show is adapted to a space designed for thousands of spectators. On stage, a colony of insects comes to life through acrobatics and choreography, with a main character who carries a 20-kilo egg and drives the narrative thread of the performance.
Behind the scenes, there is a complex operation: each week, the company moves a true micro-city with 21 trucks. More than 800 costumes travel with them, along with technical equipment, training areas, and even their own services such as laundry. Everything is set up and taken down in just a few days to adapt to each destination.
Costumes, a key part of the visual experience, are handcrafted to reflect each character’s personality. The performers also train and review each show in dedicated spaces within the venue, maintaining a routine that is rebuilt in every city.
The arrival of a show of this scale changes the usual pace of leisure in the city. For a few days, the Movistar Arena is more than just a concert venue—it becomes a meeting point where contemporary circus takes centre stage.
After OVO, the venue will continue to host new events, but the impact of this production makes it clear how major international shows keep expanding Madrid’s cultural offering.
