Spain produces 457 million litres of ice cream and consumption grows again
Ice cream is enjoying a particularly sweet moment in Spain. The country produced 457 million litres in 2025 and established itself as the European Union's fourth-largest producer, while household purchases have also grown strongly over the past year.
Only Germany, with 608 million litres, Italy, with 549 million, and France, with 525 million, produced more. Overall, European Union factories made 3.44 billion litres of ice cream during 2025, almost 2% more than the previous year.
The increase is also noticeable in home freezers. Between June 2025 and May 2026, Spanish households bought 151.97 million litres, 11.7% more than in the same previous period. Spending reached €762.68 million.
Each resident consumed an average of 3.23 litres bought for the home and spent €16.20 on this product. Consumption per person rose by 11.2%, while spending grew even more, by 15.7%, also driven by an increase in the average price.
That price stood at €5.02 per litre, 4.1% more than a year earlier. The figure helps explain why the value of the domestic market grew by 16.3%, above the growth recorded in volume.
The phenomenon is particularly visible during the warm months in cities such as Barcelona, where supermarkets, small shops and ice-cream parlours add the product to one of the busiest periods of the year. Even so, official data show that ice cream is beginning to depend somewhat less exclusively on summer.
Innovation has also broadened the offering. Traditional formats have been joined by new combinations, sizes, plant-based versions and products aimed at different audiences, while the industry seeks to extend consumption over more months of the calendar.
Spain is thus strengthening its position in a huge and highly competitive European market. Behind the cone that accompanies an August stroll is an industry that moves hundreds of millions of litres and domestic consumption that, far from cooling down, has accelerated once again.
