The collapse in passes for the driving theory test forces the DGT to change the rules
The theory test for obtaining a driving licence in Catalonia is going through its worst period: only 41% of applicants pass it first time, compared with 57% a decade ago.
The decline has led the DGT to announce that by the end of 2025 the model will no longer be purely based on memorisation, and will also assess the ability to react using videos of real risks.
Driving schools confirm that many students arrive poorly prepared, especially those who choose to study independently using online tests or videos on social media. “They memorise, but they do not interpret,” laments Sergio Martínez, a road-safety instructor. According to the Federation of Driving Schools of Catalonia, those who attend a driving school are twice as likely to pass first time as self-taught learners.
According to the Traffic Authority, the new exams will incorporate interactive scenarios to assess anticipation and decision-making at the wheel, with the aim of halting the historic decline in passes and training safer drivers.
