Eixample fills with free shows through Festival Tangent

The event turns the district into a stage spread across different corners of the neighbourhood. There is no need to enter a theatre or buy a ticket to come across a performance: the plan consists precisely of encountering culture in everyday spaces, where there are usually neighbours strolling, children playing or terraces full as evening falls.

The programme mixes established companies, emerging artists and unusual formats. The festival will begin on 30 June in Plaça del Fort Pienc with “Aleta”, by Cia. Marc Fernández, a proposal that brings contemporary dance and tradition together to open the edition with movement in the middle of the street.

The route will continue through spaces such as Casa Golferichs, Mercat de Sant Antoni, La Casa Elizalde and the interior of Illa de les Treballadores de la Numax. Each place will have its own atmosphere, one of the keys to a festival that does not seek to enclose performances, but to make them enter into dialogue with the neighbourhood.

Highlights include “Mudanzas Portas”, an object-theatre work that recovers the memory of a family business, and “FRAGILE”, a dance piece centred on vulnerability. There will also be “EMPAQUE”, by Chicharrón Circo Flamenco, which combines circus, flamenco and sensory experience.

Tangent also reserves space for more surprising formats. “I trust you” will bring live glassblowing to the stage, while “Caída libre para personas con vértigo” will use acrobatics, humour and tenderness to talk about human bonds from a very physical perspective.

Music will gather strength as night falls. The programme includes concerts by Laaza, Guillem Roma, Lima Negra, Lorena Álvarez, Extraño Weys Orquestra and Renaldo & Clara, among other names, with styles ranging from singer-songwriter music to more festive and experimental sounds.

All performances are free and, except for capacity-related exceptions, require no prior booking. That accessibility is an important part of the festival’s spirit: bringing cultural proposals closer to neighbours who might not go to a venue, but will stop to watch if the performance takes place in their square.

The Tangent Festival was born a decade ago, driven by Eixample civic centres. Since then, it has established itself as a way of taking culture out of the usual circuits and bringing it to the places where the district’s daily life unfolds.

This summer, the Eixample will not merely be a place of passage amid heat, traffic and terraces. For 16 nights, its courtyards and squares will function as small open stages, a simple invitation to stop, look around and discover that culture can also appear just a few metres from home.
