Montjuïc funicular says goodbye temporarily: five months without climbing Barcelona's most emblematic mountain
Montjuïc funicular, the small mechanical gem that has linked the city with its green lung for almost a century, will close on 20 October for five months of works.
Below the mountain, on Vila i Vilà street, Barcelona City Council will carry out a complex renovation of the drainage collector, within the Pla Clima, requiring the service to be completely suspended.
During this interruption, Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) will launch a free shuttle bus following the same route between Paral·lel and Parc de Montjuïc, running every 7 to 12 minutes and on the same timetable as the funicular.
The closure will not only make the municipal works possible: it will also be used to modernise the facility and carry out extensive maintenance, with the aim of the funicular reopening in March 2026 more efficient, accessible and sustainable.
As alternative routes, TMB recommends line 150, which connects Plaça Espanya with Castell de Montjuïc and will allow users to continue enjoying the panoramic journey over the port and the city.
It will be a brief pause for a century-old symbol which, after this technical break, will climb the mountain again with greater strength, history and renewed energy.
