Funicular de Montjuïc reopens on 13 April and restores the direct connection from Paral·lel

The Montjuïc Funicular reopens on 13 April after being out of service for almost six months. Works on the Vila i Vilà sewer collector forced the service to be suspended. Access from Paral·lel is now available. The summer timetable begins with the reopening.

Those who regularly travel between Paral·lel and Montjuïc can once again rely on the Funicular from this Monday, 13 April. The service, essential for connecting the city with the mountain and the cable car, had been interrupted since October because of major works on the Vila i Vilà water collector.

For almost half a year, Funicular operation was impossible. The works required part of the access corridor from the Paral·lel metro station to be demolished, diverting services and closing the way to passengers. Now, after completion of the collector connection and reconstruction of the corridor, the cable railway is once again available to residents and visitors.

The reopening coincides with the start of the summer timetable: from Monday to Friday, the Funicular operates from 7:30 to 22:00, and at weekends and on public holidays, from 9:00 to 22:00. In addition, the annual maintenance and inspection work, customary every year, was carried out during the closure, although this time it coincided with the major works.

The Montjuïc Funicular is much more than a simple means of transport. Since its inauguration in 1928, it has witnessed the transformation of the mountain and the city. Its route, short but panoramic, connects the urban bustle with Montjuïc’s green and cultural spaces, making it easier to reach museums, gardens and events. For many Barcelonans, it forms part of the collective memory and of the experience of discovering the city from another perspective.
