The uncertain future of 249 employees at Madrid's largest public laboratory
Madrid healthcare faces a crucial week. The central laboratory located at Hospital Infanta Sofía will change hands and has triggered a dispute between Quirónsalud and Ribera Salud that has 249 workers on edge.
The disagreement centres on the future of the workforce. The new contractor proposes a general dismissal followed by the rehiring of part of the staff, which would mean losing length of service and rights. The outgoing company, by contrast, argues for the direct transfer of employees and refuses to take on multimillion-euro compensation payments.
The uncertainty is already being felt in the centre’s day-to-day operations, which processes samples for more than one million people in the Comunidad de Madrid. Workers have called for protests and denounce the lack of information about a transition that should begin immediately to avoid failures in the service.
The conflict comes at a delicate time. According to the tender specifications, both companies should coordinate to guarantee the handover, but the lack of agreements and meetings is complicating the process. In addition, the legal leeway is unclear: although regulations provide for continuity of contracts, case law allows the incoming company to reorganise the workforce if it has its own resources.
The works council warns of possible direct consequences for users: delays in results, errors in sample handling and a loss of quality in a service that is key to hospitals throughout the region.
The dispute is not only an employment matter: it puts at stake an essential service affecting thousands of diagnoses every day. Its resolution will determine how major healthcare contracts are managed in Madrid and their impact on workers and patients.
