GERA reduces mountain rescues in 2025 after intensive prevention campaigns
GERA intervened 67 times in 2025, 7.7% fewer than in 2024, as prevention campaigns show results; the first rescue of 2026 took place in the Sierra de Madrid.
The Grupo Especial de Rescate en Altura (GERA) of the Comunidad de Madrid closed 2025 with 67 interventions to assist people lost in the mountains. This figure represents a 7.7% decrease compared to the previous year, a drop that those in charge attribute to the prevention campaigns carried out during the year.
The annual report shows that preventive work is starting to bear fruit, although GERA’s activity does not stop. Just a few hours after the chimes at Puerta del Sol, the team was already carrying out its first rescue of 2026: a woman with a broken leg in the Sierra de Madrid was attended to in a high mountain operation.
