The Grec reaches record figures and opens the debate on heat

The commemorative edition featured 96 performances across different venues in Barcelona and an overall occupancy rate of 71%. For shows directly linked to the festival, the proportion of tickets sold stood at around 95%.

The organisers also highlight the addition of around 7,000 new audience members. The figure points to an audience renewal and reinforces the Grec's role as a gateway to the performing arts for people who had not previously formed part of its usual audience.

The programme combined established names such as Mal Pelo, Calixto Bieito and Angélica Liddell with emerging artists including Florentina Holzinger, Ntando Cele and Zora Snake. Fifty-eight per cent of the shows were presented in Catalan and 44.4% were led by women.

The heat, however, affected the experience both on and off stage. Stifling nights and uncomfortable seats prompted complaints from part of the audience, while artistic teams had to rehearse for hours under the sun.

The problem was especially apparent during the premiere of L’òpera dels tres rals, directed by Marta Pazos, which coincided with one of the summer's heatwaves. The festival management acknowledges that measures will need to be considered to better protect both professionals and attendees.

Changing the dates of the Grec is not currently among the options, since July remains a central month for Barcelona's cultural activity. The organisers will have to find solutions compatible with the amphitheatre's open-air nature and the limitations of a historic space.

The audience success confirms the festival's appeal half a century after its birth, but it also leaves a clear priority for future editions. Improving shade, ventilation and comfort will be decisive if the Teatre Grec is to remain one of Barcelona's major summer venues.
