Gòtic gets a farmers' market: fresh produce every Tuesday at La Mercè

The Gòtic gains a new farmers' market in Plaça de la Mercè. Every Tuesday afternoon, residents and visitors will be able to buy fresh, local produce. The initiative responds to local demand and seeks to revitalise neighbourhood life.

The heart of Barcelona is recovering the rhythm of local markets. From 24 February, Plaça de la Mercè in the Gòtic will become every Tuesday a meeting point for people looking for fresh, sustainable food without leaving the neighbourhood. The new farmers' market, which will operate from 16:30 to 19:30, promises to bring local agroecological production closer to residents, at a time when the traditional offering has been displaced by tourist pressure.

The arrival of this market responds to a real need: many Gòtic residents have stopped shopping at La Boqueria, turned into an attraction for visitors and less accessible for everyday use. After months of procedures and administrative obstacles, approval of a new municipal ordinance has opened the door to this kind of initiative, allowing the neighbourhood to recover part of its essence and food autonomy.

The market will start with three or four stalls, all run by small producers. Among the confirmed stalls, there will be fruit and vegetables from Maresme, artisanal cured meats from Osona, Valencian citrus fruit and dairy products from Baix Empordà. The proposal is modest but ambitious: if the reception is positive, the market could grow and establish itself as an essential fixture in the Gòtic's weekly calendar.

The initiative forms part of Pla de Barris, which seeks to rebalance everyday life in areas under pressure from tourism. For residents, it represents an opportunity to reconnect with local trade and support those who grow and make quality products in the region.

Farmers' markets have been gaining ground in Barcelona in recent years, although opening new spaces has not always been easy. The most recent to join was the one in Sagrada Família in 2022, and since then neighbourhood demand has continued to grow. Now the Gòtic joins this network, opting for fairer and more sustainable food.

Plaça de la Mercè, in the heart of the old town, is much more than a historic site. For centuries it has been a meeting point and a setting for the neighbourhood's everyday life. Its transformation into a farmers' market every Tuesday revives an urban tradition that seemed lost, restoring prominence to residents and small producers in the heart of Barcelona.
