Hospital del Sureste expands to better serve Arganda
Hospital del Sureste in Arganda del Rey is preparing an expansion that will directly affect more than 214,000 residents of south-east Madrid. The refurbishment begins this autumn, costs €14.5 million and seeks to reinforce a centre already serving as a healthcare reference for several municipalities.
The work will add 24 new inpatient rooms. That increase in capacity is key in an area where the population has grown and where many patients depend on this hospital for admissions, procedures and medical follow-up without having to travel to other parts of Madrid.
The project will also incorporate a new Hospital de Día with 17 places. This type of space is especially useful for treatments, checks and procedures that do not require an overnight stay, which can make care more comfortable for patients and families.
Another important improvement will be in the surgical area. The hospital will have two additional operating theatres, bringing the total to seven. The expansion seeks to better absorb demand and facilitate the organisation of procedures in a centre serving an increasingly large population.
The UCI will also grow with two new bays and a therapeutic terrace designed to support the recovery of vulnerable patients. In addition, the Unidad de Recuperación Post Anestésica will add 12 places, a necessary reinforcement for the daily operation of the operating theatres.
The refurbishment includes two specific areas to diversify psychiatric care. Mental health therefore gains its own space within an expansion that is not limited to adding square metres, but seeks to adapt the hospital to more varied care needs.
The timetable provides for the works to begin this autumn and finish in 2027. During that period, the challenge will be to expand the facilities without disrupting more than strictly necessary the operation of a hospital that already receives thousands of patients every year.
The expansion of Hospital del Sureste speaks of the growth of Arganda and its entire area of influence. When a hospital gains beds, operating theatres and services, it does not only change a building: it changes the way many families experience an operation, an emergency, an admission or treatment close to home.
