A fire forces the evacuation of Torre Moeve in the heart of the financial district
The office routine was suddenly disrupted in Azca. A fire at Torre Moeve forced the evacuation of hundreds of workers during the afternoon, creating an unusual scene in the financial district: employees on the pavement under the June sun, waiting to find out when they could return for their belongings or retrieve their cars from the car park.
The evacuation was carried out quickly and orderly, although uncertainty grew as the minutes passed. Many workers had left laptops, keys, bags or documents inside, and did not know whether they would be able to return to the building that same day.
Among the groups gathered in the street, the same feeling was repeated: at first, some thought it might be another drill. In a building with regular safety protocols, not everyone immediately understood that the alert was real until the need to leave the floors was confirmed.
Several employees reported the smell of burning cable and discomfort from smoke in some areas of the building. The initial toll helped ease the tension: one person needed treatment for anxiety and two others for mild smoke inhalation, with no serious injuries reported.
Madrid City Council firefighters worked to extinguish the fire while the area remained partly disrupted by the presence of workers, emergency teams and onlookers. Nearby, some employees sought shade, others took refuge in nearby cafés and many took the opportunity to call relatives or colleagues.
From the assembly point, Moeve managers tried to convey calm. The company said that the building had been completely evacuated and that, when safety conditions allowed, access would be organised in small groups to collect belongings and remove vehicles.
The incident affected employees of different companies based in the tower, including technology firms and multinationals. In an area such as Azca, where every building brings together thousands of work routines, an evacuation of this kind also disrupts access, pedestrian mobility and the usual pace of nearby offices.
Torre Moeve is part of Madrid’s business landscape and concentrates intense daily activity. Its evacuation is a reminder of how decisive emergency protocols are in high-rise buildings, where a localised incident can become a safety issue for hundreds of people within minutes.
The afternoon left a very Madrid image of the unexpected: workers with badges around their necks, pending calls, heat on the pavement and the city continuing at its own pace all around. In Azca, the fire did not only interrupt a working day; it also tested the response capacity of one of the capital’s major office hubs.
