The new Swatch launch overwhelms shops and forces police intervention in Barcelona
Barcelona experienced scenes this weekend more typical of a major concert or a technology launch than a watch shop. The arrival of the new Swatch model in collaboration with Audemars Piguet caused long queues, improvised camping and moments of tension on Passeig de Gràcia and at l’Illa Diagonal. Some buyers had waited more than five days to get one of the year's most desired pieces.

Anticipation grew hour by hour until it exceeded all expectations. Dozens of people spent entire nights outside the shops, with folding chairs, blankets and food, while the queues continued to grow. The situation ultimately overwhelmed the shops’ capacity to organise it, especially during the hours before opening.
Faced with the crowds and the risk of incidents, those in charge of the shops decided to cancel the sale at the last minute. The news caused frustration among those who had been waiting for days and led to tense moments in the surrounding area. The Mossos d’Esquadra had to intervene to bring the situation under control and disperse part of the crowd gathered outside the entrances.
Many attendees left the area without a watch and with the feeling that they had wasted several days waiting in vain. Some buyers complained about a lack of information and criticised the failure to anticipate a reservation system or staggered distribution to avoid the crowds. Others resignedly accepted that this kind of exclusive launch has now become a genuine mass phenomenon.
The collaboration between Swatch and Audemars Piguet had generated enormous anticipation among collectors and design enthusiasts. The combination of one accessible brand and another associated with Swiss luxury drove up interest from weeks before the launch, further fuelled by social media and resale platforms where some models quickly multiply their original price.
The episode once again reflects how certain commercial launches can disrupt the routines of heavily frequented areas of Barcelona for hours. Paseo de Gràcia, used to being home to major international brands and shopping tourism, experienced an unusual scene even for one of the city’s most exclusive shopping thoroughfares.
For years, Swatch has turned its special collaborations into global events capable of mobilising thousands of people. The phenomenon took off especially after the launch of the MoonSwatch with Omega, which generated similar queues in cities around the world. Barcelona, with its mix of tourism, luxury and urban culture, has established itself as one of the settings in which this type of commercial phenomenon takes on the greatest social and media significance.
