Liceu Mar seeks an architect: international competition begins for its new Port Vell venue

Barcelona takes a decisive step towards the creation of Liceu Mar, the future extension of the Gran Teatre del Liceu that will rise next to the Mediterranean as a symbol of modernity and culture. The Port de Barcelona and el Liceu have launched an international architecture competition to shape this ambitious project, which will cover 9,000 m² and involve an investment of 47.2 million euros.

The competition, with a budget of 1.2 million, will take place in two phases: first, five teams will be selected, and then, anonymously, the finalist proposals will be chosen. The schedule foresees the drafting of the project between 2026 and 2027, with the opening set for 2032.

The new space aims to become the cultural gateway to Port Vell, housing the Centre Internacional d’Òpera de Nova Creació, as well as promoting dance, contemporary creation, and the educational activities of the Petit Liceu.

With Liceu Mar, the city seeks to open a new chapter where tradition and innovation come together by the sea, transforming the quay into a cultural hub of international reference.
