MACBA opens free for three evenings a week this summer

The measure is added to free entry on the first Sunday of every month, already a regular appointment for many visitors. With this extension, people who live in Barcelona or spend a few days in the city have more opportunity to visit the museum without paying admission and without relying only on the weekend.

The afternoon slot also has a clear advantage in summer. It makes it possible to avoid some of the day’s heat, combine the visit with a walk around Raval or come after work, study or other plans in the centre.

During these Vespres MACBA, several current exhibitions can be visited. One of the main ones is “Com una dansa d’estornells. Col·lecció MACBA: trenta anys i infinites formes de ser”, an exhibition that traces the museum’s 30 years and proposes looking at its collection through multiple ways of being, creating and relating.

“Basel Abbas i Ruanne Abou-Rahme. Presoners de l’amor. Fins al sol de la llibertat” and “Anna Moreno. La tercera torsió” are also part of the route, alongside the installations “Espiral del temps”, by Edwin van der Heide, and “Els ocells-estels”, by Aurèlia Muñoz, located in the atrium of the Meier building.

From 9 July, “El gest de filmar. El vídeo a la Col·lecció MACBA” will also be added, a proposal focused on video within the museum’s holdings. The programme thus makes it possible to approach very different languages, from the historic collection to installations, moving image and more experimental work.

On Saturdays, free entry coincides with guided visits to “Com una dansa d’estornells”. They are led by the Avalancha collective and offer a more participatory experience of touring the exhibition with a different perspective.

These visits are also free with admission, but require advance registration. Therefore, although it is not compulsory to book to access the Vespres MACBA, the museum recommends doing so through its website, especially if you want to take part in the guided activities.

MACBA occupies a highly recognisable place in Raval, both for its collection and for the building designed by Richard Meier. Since opening in 1995, the museum has become one of Barcelona’s key spaces for contemporary art and a meeting point for very different audiences.

The initiative comes at a time when many local residents are looking for affordable, cool and central plans without blowing their budget. Entering the museum free of charge three afternoons a week makes MACBA a simple option for an impromptu visit, a leisurely return visit or discovering exhibitions that may have been left pending.

This summer, Raval thus gains another reason to stop. Amid the heat, terraces and the constant movement of the centre, MACBA offers two hours of cultural pause at the end of the day: an easy way to approach contemporary art without the price being a barrier.
