Mercat de la Terra returns to Poble-sec this Saturday after the August break
Mercat de la Terra returns this Saturday 5 September to Jardins de les Tres Xemeneies after its customary break throughout August. The producers’ market organised by Slow Food Barcelona will once again be set up at number 49 avenida del Paral·lel from 9:00 to 15:00, with free admission.
Each edition brings together more than 40 producers, although not all take part every week. Permanent and rotating stalls make it possible to buy seasonal vegetables and fruit, organic meat and cured meats, dairy products, sourdough bread, eggs, honey, oil, preserves, nuts, vegan products and kombucha, among other foods, directly.
The market's defining feature is precisely direct sales without intermediaries. The producers themselves bring their food to Poble-sec, under a model through which Slow Food aims to shorten the distance between field and consumer and promote local, seasonal products made using practices consistent with its environmental criteria.
The timetable changes according to the time of year. From September to May, the Mercat de la Terra operates on Saturdays from 9:00 to 15:00. In June and July it shortens its hours to 13:30, and it remains closed throughout August. Therefore, 31 May does not mark the end of the market: activity continues in summer with different hours before returning in September.
The visit is not limited to shopping either. Tastings, workshops, talks and cooking demonstrations are held throughout its editions, along with children's activities. The specific programme may vary from one Saturday to another, so not all of those activities are necessarily available every week.
There is also an option for those who prefer to arrive with their shopping already prepared. Slow Food Barcelona allows customers to order products online between Sunday and Thursday, choose a collection time and collect the order during Saturday's market. The platform also provides sustainable home delivery for orders that reach the established minimum.
The Mercat de la Terra has operated at Tres Xemeneies since 2015 and is part of Slow Food's international Earth Markets network. Its location is around 150 metres from Paral·lel station, connected to the L2 y L3 de Metro lines, so it can be reached without travelling by car.
After a month without stalls in the gardens, the market begins its new autumn season this 5 September. From now until the end of May, it will keep the extended 9:00 to 15:00 schedule every Saturday, before adapting it again with the arrival of next summer.
