Goodbye to the paper ticket: Barcelona’s metro is now T-Mobilitat only
Travelling by metro in Barcelona changes from today. Cardboard tickets are disappearing and T-Mobilitat becomes the only way to access the network, marking the final shift to the digital system.
The change affects both residents and tourists. Travel passes are moving to a rechargeable format and the classic magnetic tickets are no longer used, eliminating familiar actions such as inserting the ticket into the machine or checking journeys on paper.
For those visiting the city, tourist passes are also adapting to the new system. They remain without an additional surcharge, although they now operate under the same digital model as the other passes.
The transition does not end here. TMB is already working on the next step: allowing direct access with a bank card or mobile phone, without the need to buy a ticket beforehand. This will make the process even faster and more automatic.
The aim is to simplify the use of transport and reduce paper. Barcelona is thus aligning itself with other major cities that are opting for contactless systems to speed up daily journeys.
If you use the metro, you will have to adapt to the digital system if you have not already done so. You will no longer be able to buy cardboard tickets, so you will need a card or mobile phone. In return, access will be faster and more convenient, especially when direct payment by bank card arrives. For tourists, the change also simplifies the use of transport without additional complications.
